The bird bike

My bicycle carries a flock of cut-metal birds and a box of art. At weddings, markets and festivals it becomes a pop-up post office: pick a postcard of my art, write it on the spot, and it gets mailed from the bike.

About

I'm Greg Ellis, a self-taught artist in San Luis Obispo, California. I started painting on a whim in 2012, and I always return to birds: their squawks and trills, their courtship and migrations, the flash of light in their eyes. They are sparks of consciousness held to the earth only by a thin branch, if anything at all.

My work balances anatomical accuracy with room for beautiful chaos, in paint that's splashed, blown or poured, and in birds drawn on sheet music and old blueprints. Lately I've taken up brush-tipped and gel-tipped pens, playing with minimal lines, simple palettes and a made-up language. I believe there's a bird to be painted for every feeling we can have.
